Newsletter #15 August 2024 - Koroboi Foundation

Dear family, friends and interested parties,

Many of you have heard of Koroboi Foundation, but maybe not everyone. Koroboi Foundation was established in 2023 to provide assistance to the people in and around Kibara hospital in northern Tanzania.

The board of the foundation consists of: Michiel Ruijs, Raymond Kimman and Joep Coppes. Through your relationship with 1 or more of these board members, or through your expressed interest in recent months, you are receiving this newsletter.

More background information about the foundation can be found on our website.

How it all began

In the early 1960s, Dutchman Kees Ruijs worked as the first doctor at the then newly established St. Mary Hospital in Kibara, Tanzania.

Michiel, son of Kees and Ank Ruijs. and founder of Koroboi Foundation, was born in Kibara during that period. In 2023, Michiel returned to this hospital for the first time and was touched by what he found there: a small and enormously dedicated medical team, a huge demand for help from patients and a hospital in dire need of renovation on many fronts. From that moment, the desire arose to establish the Koroboi Foundation, with the aim of improving medical care for the people who need it most in Kibara and the surrounding area.

A New Milestone for the Koroboi Foundation: Signing the MoU

Our first steps

Since our inception, we have taken important steps. These include creating a policy plan, obtaining ANBI status, and creating a website (www.koroboi.nl). We have also launched a fundraising campaign and are shaping our communications.

Most importantly, we have established good cooperation with the hospital board, doctors and nurses. The hospital has concrete requests for help, only unfortunately we cannot address them all at once. We are committed to long-term cooperation, and divide the requests for help into sub-projects. For each project, we make a financial contribution. This way, we bring the hospital into a better condition step by step.

We have drawn up a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the hospital board in which we have clearly defined working methods, responsibilities, reporting and transparency about the start and end of each project. This MoU also stipulates that Koroboi Foundation will contribute 60% of the cost of each project, and the diocese (under which the hospital falls) will fund the remaining 40%.

The Maternity Ward: a step towards better care!

Our first project is the replacement of beds, mattresses, mosquito nets and lockers in the maternity ward of the hospital.

Once this is completed, replacement of beds, mattresses, nets and lockers of the other wards will follow.

In consultation with the hospital board, we will do this in 3 consecutive phases (subprojects).

The first trial shipment of a bed for the Maternity ward was recently delivered! (See the photo for this).

In our next newsletter, we will share results and images from the first project (the maternity ward).

We were able to achieve this through donations from individuals, charities and companies. We also set up a fundraising campaign.

If you want to support Kibara now

The purchase of all beds, mattresses, nets and lockers will cost a total of over €31,500.

Koroboi Foundation will fund 60% of the beds and accessories either € 19.000,-.
