A good start is of vital importance

A safe pregnancy, good delivery care, and attention to newborns and young children together form the foundation for a healthy future. It is in that first, vulnerable phase of life that good care can make the difference.

A new life begins vulnerably. That is precisely why good care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first phase of life is so significant. For a baby, a good start can truly make the difference between growing up strong or facing disadvantages, illness, and vulnerability early on.

Within St. Mary's Hospital in Kibara, this care is thankfully receiving more and more attention. Previously, significant progress was made with the construction of a new maternity ward. Later, we as the Koroboi Foundation were also able to contribute to its furnishing, including with new beds. These are valuable improvements. After all, good care for mother and child begins with a safe, clean, and dignified space, where there is peace and where initial medical care can be provided effectively.

But a good start does not stop the moment a baby is born. It is precisely afterwards that a very important period begins. The first weeks, months and years of a child’s life are decisive for their further development. During this time, the body and brain grow rapidly. A foundation for resilience, recovery and general health is also laid in this phase.

When nutrition is inadequate in the early period, or when a child receives too little medical care and protection, it can have major consequences. Young children are vulnerable. What is lacking in the beginning often has long-lasting effects. That is why we consider it important to look not only at a safe pregnancy and childbirth, but also at the care afterwards: for newborns, babies and young children.

At Stichting Koroboi, we view the care for pregnant women, childbirth care, and the care for young children as a single entity. One is closely linked to the other. A mother who receives good guidance during pregnancy, a safe delivery, and then appropriate care for her child: together that forms the basis for a better future.

Especially in an environment where resources are limited, that initial care is invaluable. Sometimes improvement starts with something tangible and practical, such as a new ward or good beds. But behind that lies something bigger: the wish that mothers can deliver safely and that children get a fair chance to start life healthy.

We believe it is important to be involved precisely at these vulnerable moments. Because where a child gets a good start, not only health grows, but also hope. And where hope grows, the future grows.

Next month, we will continue writing about how a healthy start in the early years impacts a child's later life.
